How long does membership last? Is there an annual fee to stay a member?
Letter Writers Alliance membership is just a one-time fee and that is all. Once you are in, you are in!
What name goes on my member card?
The member card comes blank except for your member number. This way you can write whatever fake name or silly title you wish or give the membership as a gift.
When can I log in?
If you ordered the physical membership kit:
The login info comes in your member welcome packet, which is mailed to you. The membership is sent via First Class mail and normally arrives within 3-5 days for U.S. members. You'll be able to log in with the online account you created once you get your membership pack.
If you opted for digital delivery:
You will get your login info emailed to you. You will be able to log in with the online account you created once your membership number is assigned to you. This normally happens within 20 mins, but if our servers are running slow, it can be closer to 4 hours.
If you do not see a membership number on your account page within 24 hours, contact us via email and we will get it fixed-up. You don't need your member number to log in, but you do need it for postal projects, so hold on to it!

What is the digital delivery Membership?
We offer a digital delivery version of our membership for our international members or those who have customs or postal problems. The major difference is that you are sent a PDF of the welcome letter and membership card and you do not get a member patch.
With digital delivery, you are able to login via the online account you created once your membership number is assigned to you. Do you accept members outside of the U.S.?
Absolutely! Our community is worldwide and we use virtual letter socials, live video, and online classes to unite us all in real time.
Do I get automatically matched with pen pals?
You have to sign-up for the pen pal swap in order to get pals. You will be able to view the pen pal application once you log into the member site. We understand that not everyone wants any/more pen pals, so we don't automatically match you with people.
I don't want any pen pals, I just want to be a member. Can I do that?
No problem! The pen pal swap is optional, not mandatory. It is something you need to sign-up for in order to get matched. If you change your mind later down the road, you can sign-up any time you wish, even if it is years after you first became a member.
Do you keep an L.W.A. member register?
We don't keep an L.W.A. register! We don't want access to that kind of information. Your privacy is extremely important to us and we never want to be responsible for your information getting away from us. We also want you to be in control of your personal information and how much you participate in the Alliance, which is why all of our optional activities are on an opt-in basis.
Login Problems & Lost Cards
My password isn't working, help!
There can be two reasons for this
You created an online account with us
Even though you registered online with us, you won't be able to login to the member's items until you receive your membership kit in the mail. You need your membership number to participate in certain members-only projects, which you get in the mail with your kit.
You never created an online account with us
That is totally cool. You just have to create an account with us and you should be able to login to view all the good stuff.
If you get an error that you are not allowed to view member's items, then that means your membership isn't connected to your online account. This is an easy fix! Just email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get everything connected.
You don't need your member number to log in, but you do need it for certain projects, so hold on to it.
What happens if I lose my card?
We do not keep a record of your member number or your address in order to maintain your privacy. You can get a replacement card for $1, but if you don't remember your member number, we will reassign you a new number. There is no need to re-order a full membership kit if you lose your member card. You don't stop being a member if you lose your card.
Pro-tip: Take a picture of your member card with your phone and you will always have a file of it.
Can I sign-up for the pen pal swap if I lost my card?
Yes, you can sign-up for the swap if you lost your card IF you remember your member number. You need a member number to sign-up for the swap. If you don't remember your membership number, order a replacement card for $1; we will reassign you a new number. Once you get your new card and membership number, you'll be able to sign-up for the swap again.
It says invalid or no account when I try to log in!
You have to manually create an account with us either when checking out or after you get your membership card. If it continues to give you the "invalid or no account" error, try creating an account.
It says my membership hasn't been linked to my online account!
This happens if you purchased a membership prior to 2017 before we had individual accounts. Just email us and we will link your membership to your online account and you'll be back to your full membership access. This is an unfortunate hiccup in upgrading our login process and we really appreciate your patience during the transition period.
Online Account and Privacy
When you create an online account in order to access the member's area, you have a lot of options for the type of data you can put in there. You may be wondering just how we use or don't use that info attached to your account. Well, here is how the online account works:
- The information on your account is mainly for you placing orders (ie: Billing and shipping info).
- The account itself gives you the key to access member items
- There is no link between your account and your pen pal request(s). Each member supplies the name, address, etc that they want to get their pen pal correspondence under. This is done through the request form.
We do this all in order to maintain our member's privacy, so while our website makes check out and login easy, that data is not shared with us as shop owners as you navigate the member's site. The only time we see your account info is when you place an order (so we can ship your items to you) or if you ask us to make a change to your account.
